On a rainy afternoon, on 29th April, nearly 40 students and faculty of UWC Dilijan disregarded the gloomy weather and participated in the charitable triathlon. The mission of the sports event was to raise money for orphans living with HIV in Mfangano, Kenya.
The money raised as a result of the event will cover the costs of vocational education for 10 young orphans and will help them pursue a better, more autonomous life. This philanthropic event was organised by members of the UWCD community and David Wachuru, a humanitarian activist from Mfangano.
David contracted HIV at birth. However, he was lucky to receive enough care and education to be able to live an active life. He has set up a project to support orphans affected by the disease and prevent, as far as possible, the hardships most orphans with HIV go through. These children often receive no care or treatment at all. The opportunity to receive vocational education would allow them to take ownership of their lives.
